Q. Our young dog has the very unpleasant habit of wanting to eat other dogs faeces when out walking, is there anything I can do to stop this ?"
A. There are several reasons why your dog may be ‘recycling’, or indulging in ‘coprophagia'. From an early age, puppies see their mother clean up faces after them and your pup is unaware as to thier owners disgust at this habit. As most dog owners know, the first thing a puppy wants to do when exploring is to chew or eat, and recycling maybe a natural extension of this.
What can you do to stop it ?
Apart from the anti social aspect, Coprophagia can be a symptom of worms so make sure your puppy is adequately treated. Recycling can also be a sympton of nutritional problems, so make sure your dog has a well balanced diet, and if in doubt check with your vet. We have been told of people who have tried cayenne pepper or mustard powder on faeces, and your vet will also be able to advise on over the counter remedies. With regard to training and behaviour, if you catch your puppy in the act, say "leave that" and then praise them when they have left it and come to you.
We have had a tweleve month old dog with this habit, and have found, changing her diet, and keeping her on the lead on walks has helped.
If your puppy or adult dog persists with recycling you should consult your vet.
