THE KENNEL CLUB 74TH SPANIEL CHAMPIONSHIP Thursday 15|16|17|January|2004
The Kennel Club 74th Spaniel Championship Field Trial for Spaniels organised by the Spaniel Club was held at the Dornells Estate, Castle Douglas, Scotland, by the kind permission of Mr & Mrs J Syz.
This private sporting estate lies north west of the old market town of Castle Douglas, between Loch Ken on it's Eastern side and Lauriston Forest to the west. The terrain is a mixture of undulating pasture and woodland and is a wonderful natural habitat for many species of indigenous wild life and game.
The Kennel Club for the first time introduced a four judge system, comprising Mr Keith Carter, Chairman of the Spaniel Club, Mr Graham Mulligan, Mr John Holloway, and Mr Aidan Patterson from Ireland.
Graham Mulligan felt that the new format proved successful. " I thought it worked well, it allowed the judges an extra pair of eyes, especially with marking and runners, and it helped to take some of the pressure off us, ensuring fairer judging for the competitors".
The English Springer Spaniel Championship was won by FTCh Annickview Anna, bred, owned and handled by Mr David Lisett, with the same combination also finishing second with FTCh Toonarmy Top-Tip.
The Cocker Spaniel Championship was won by Ian Openshaw and FTCh Chyknell Gold Star.
